What Happens During the Aluminum Dross Recycling Process?
During aluminum dross recycling, hot dross is skimmed from molten aluminum, collected in a pan set, and loaded into an aluminum dross press — also known as a dross press machine — where it is compressed automatically to squeeze out the residual liquid aluminum. This dross press equipment stops oxidation by cutting off contact with air and recovers aluminum that would otherwise be lost. The pressed dross can be further processed downstream using physical or chemical methods. The entire operation typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes per cycle and can run continuously in an active aluminum smelting facility. How Does Hot Dross Form in an Aluminum Smelting Facility? When aluminum is melted in a furnace — typically at temperatures between 700°C and 800°C — its surface reacts with atmospheric oxygen to form aluminum oxide. This layer, combined with salts, flux residues, and other trace materials in the melt, accumulates as a floating layer known as dross. Operators skim this dross away f
